THE SCENE: Comix Cafe closed, Murphy's and Dragonfly in the works

It's August, and I seem to have developed my list of this summer's most-frequented spots: Marge's Lakeside (for the jukebox, of course, and the sand I fondly find in my mary janes days later), Abilene (for cans of Porkslap, live music, and the laid-back vibe), The Black Pearl (for dollar PBRs), Sandra's Saloon (for the music, the company, and of course, the drinks), The Bug Jar (as always, for live music), and The Mez (for open mics, and the chance burlesque show. OK, maybe that was just the one Friday, when we were blessed with a visit from a Buffalo troupe).

It's been a blur of a summer because of all these hangouts, but there are even more in the works. Here's a bit of a Rochester nightlife update for you:

New pub coming to East & Alexander

Soon Murphy's Law Irish Pub will grace the corner opposite Monty's (Korner). Construction is underway, and where you could once see evidence - in the form of abandoned desks and stray papers - of the place's previous incarnation as a title company, you can now see the beginnings of a handsome bar. Large tapestry-style posters have heralded the bar's coming for weeks, even months, and presumably created that sought-after buzz. But if the state of construction is any indication, it'll be a little longer before the doors open. Check back with CITY for updates.

Comedy club closed

Comix Café in Winton Place is "closed until further notice," according to its website. The phone number has been disconnected, and no one could be reached for comment. The site advises comedy-seekers to check back for details. In the meantime, get your comedy fix from one of the following: stand-up queen Kathy Griffin (she's at CMAC this Sunday); the Village Idiots (the Village Gate-based group has two performances of "Gorilla Theatre" this weekend, go to villageidiotspresent.com for location and details), or from Geva's Comedy Improv troupe, which holds shows one weekend a month, two nights in a row. Season VI starts up in September; go to gevatheatre.org/onstage/improv for details.

Bye-bye Park Bench, hello Dragonfly

As you might've noticed during the Park Ave Fest, there's something new in - or at least outside of - the building that recently housed Pontillo's and the Park Bench. It's a big black-and-white dragonfly sign, and it means the new hangout Dragonfly (being run by two of the Bug Jar's current owners, Brant Riggs and Aaron Gibalski) is on its way. The place was open briefly (outdoors only) during the festival, and Riggs says they're shooting for October 1 for the grand opening. Check back with CITY for updates.
