Paul Mark is one of my favorite songwriters. He is a master of the metaphor, a titan of twang, a salacious supplicant of soul. And it all burns bright on his latest, "Blood & Treasure," another slice of Mark's hipster wit and storied lyrics swimming in a bluesy swamp. Cuts like "Don't Get Me Started" and "Raise The Roof" incorporate some sweet soul sister back-up around The Van Dorens' clean twang 'n' boogie aesthetic. "I'm Still High" is a hysterical Tin Pan Alley send-up to the morning after. And is that Santo & Johnny on "Wrong Pair Of Shoes"? Obviously Mark has rummaged through racks of Stax and Chess, and maybe even a little Sun, but his songs are so well written and personal, they stand alone. Pick up this outstanding 11-song platter of pleasure, with a cover that looks like an artistic collaboration between Salvador Dali and Fred Sanford, and it'll be all yours.
