We buy blacklights and ultraviolet lamps to make posters come to life, and dance clubs frequently use them to add ambiance. "CSI" uses them to find blood, not to mention other bodily fluids. So you don't have to be a rock geek to think fluorescent rocks are cool.

This week Paul Merkel of the Mineral Section of the Rochester Academy of Science will give a lecture on "Fluorescent Minerals." He'll also exhibit some with the club's new ultraviolet display light. And you're invited to bring your own rocks to see if they shine the light fantastic.

The Rochester Academy of Science Mineral Section meets at 7:30 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month (except April) in the Community Room of Brighton's Town Hall, 2300 Elmwood Avenue. This month they bumped it up a bit to Thursday, November 20. Type rasny.org into your browser for more information.

I hope I can make this! My first husband and I were devoted, regular members in the 70's. They had great field trips, and we'd take our little son along on the camping trips.
