Broadway shows come to Rochester all the time, either via touring productions or local theater companies adapting them for the local stage. But it's rare that a Rochester production heads to Broadway. That's what's happening this week, when the locally written musical adaptation of Jane Austen's "Pride & Prejudice" takes to the stage for a special preview performance Tuesday, October 21, before heading to its new Broadway home.

"Jane Austen's ‘Pride and Prejudice,' The New Musical" tells the story, of, well, Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice." (This is actually the second local adaptation of the classic literary work to appear in Rochester this year, after Geva's non-musical version premiered this spring.) The new version was written by Rochester writers Lindsay Warren Baker and Amanda Jacobs, who will re-tell the story of feisty Elizabeth Bennet, stoic Mr. Darcy, and the rest of Austen's storied characters, this time with song, as members of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra make up the 17-piece on-stage orchestra.

The production stars Laura Osnes, known to TV fans and Broadway patrons alike after winning the role of Sandy during the NBC competition "Grease: You're the One That I Want!", and then portraying the Rydell High sweetheart for a year on the Great White Way. Joining her will be renowned Rochester actress Donna Lynne Champlin ("Sweeney Todd," "Hollywood Arms") as Jane Austen herself, and Colin Donnell ("Jersey Boys," "Follies") as Mr. Darcy.

The one-night-only performance of "Jane Austen's ‘Pride and Prejudice'" starts Tuesday, October 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Eastman Theatre, 60 Gibbs Street. Tickets cost $35-$75.
